We, or the
machines, who’s in charge here?
Lecture on philosophy and technology with Pierre Roland,
philosopher.
The promises of greater freedom and leisure with the advent
of smart machines has never materialized. Instead we are
increasingly over-worked, depressed and burned out. What
went wrong?
Have we become
tools of our tools? Or is it that we have been educated
to believe we are only machines; machines building machines;
operating without living, like machines?
-
In the name of preserving life, our
hospitals spend fortunes connecting our bodies to
machines, aimlessly sustaining body functions as if this
had any resemblance to living and dying with dignity.
-
In our desire to live longer, will
we begin to grow our own clones for spare parts? Are we
the body?
-
In the name of personal freedom we
have become collectively enslaved to aimless industrial
greed.
-
In our quest for personal health we
are systematically intoxicating the environment, now
driven into extinction of its biodiversity and eventually
all its life forms.
-
Can we live in a world without life?
What is life?
- Can we live without a
purpose of learning, of awakening?
- Who are we? What purpose
do we serve each day of our lives?
All
important questions on which philosophy sheds plenty of
light!
