CONFUCIUS
A Leader in Times of Chaos

Knowing and Walking the PAth

With prof. Pierre Lemasson

Confucianism is interested in developing a social order based upon the cultivation of the individual. It seeks political harmony by trying to achieve a perfect moral harmony in man himself.

Politics as understood by Confucius is the Science and Art of leading, educating and harmonizing the people.

For Confucius, Ethics was aimed at the individual while Politics applied to society:
“Political order is the product of an ethical order”.

Therefore, its most distinct characteristic was the abolition of differences between Politics and Ethics. Fundamentally, Confucian Doctrine has a humanistic attitude, free from vain mysticism and centered on the essential relationships between human beings.
It established an order of life, a political-ethical system designed to achieve fraternity, concord and harmony.

Confucianism has dominated China for nearly two thousand five hundred years. In the XXth century it was revived from an attempt by the communist party to eradicate it.  Leaders requested that all party members study Confucius in order to eliminate the doctrine.  This had the reverse effect inspiring the whole party into reforms for better education.

How can we develop this vision of leadership today?
Confucius was once asked by the governing elite how to find honest candidates for government. His response: "Be honest your selves".
